EIN stands for Employer Identification Number which is issued by the IRS(Internal Revenue Service) to identify your business in the U.S. It is a nine digit number which is used for paying tax. Its quite similar to SSN(Social Security Number), however, SSN is used for a person while the EIN is used for business.

Need of EIN number-

In the US, its mandatory for each business to have an EIN number in order to run a business, because it plays a crucial role while paying tax and filing annual returns online.

To get an EIN number your business is required to be located in the U.S. and the person who is applying for it must have his own taxpayer identification number like SSN. From a sole proprietor to a multinational company, any type of business can apply for it.

Steps to apply for EIN number

There are four ways to apply for an EIN number for free:

Online- To apply for an EIN number you can visit EIN Assistant, from Monday to Friday. Before filling this form you must be aware of the questions related to it. If you miss anything then you have to start it again from the beginning. Guidelines by IRS-

● You have to complete your application form in one sitting, you can’t change any later once saved.

● Your application details shall be filled as early as you can, because for certain security reasons, every session stays for 15 minutes.

The EIN application form contains following information:

● Identify

● Details

● Address

● Authenticate

● EIN Number Confirmation

Phone- International applicants can call (919) 504–6664 from Monday to Friday to apply for EIN number for free. On call you have to answer some questions included in Form SS-4. You can also give authority to someone else to call on behalf of your business and answer all the questions present in the Form SS-4 on the phone. But for this you have to fill a ‘third party designee’ column in Form SS-4 and sign it to get authorization.

Fax- If you don’t want to answer all questions on the phone then you can fill the SS-4 Form and fax it to your state fax number. You can fax your form at any time because it is available 24 hours a day from Monday to Friday. Do check your filled form twice before sending it through fax, and ensure every answer is given or not.

You will receive your EIN number by fax within four to five business days.

Mail- Well, if you are in hurry, mail is the suitable option for you. You will receive your EIN after 4 weeks. Just fill out the SS-4 Form and send it via email to the appropriate IRS office.
